The building of the Dutch Institute for Sound and Vision was designed by architect Piet Eling.

The project, that was completed in 2006, resulted on the outside in a colorful building.
On the inside sunlight streams through the colored glass and transforms it into a cathedral.

The institute is one of the largest audiovisual archives in Europe.  It contains more than 750.00 hours of television, film, radio and music (1898-today).

Day 86 - Bookcovers or bookalikes

One week ago a Dutch newspaper, called De Volkskant, published an article on bookcovers.

The title of this article was 'Bookalikes'. This refers to the fact that publishers often use the same type of illustration for bookcovers.

The photos below were published in De Volkskrant.

Day 83 - Climbing endless stairs...

Jiyen Lee, a Korean artist, created an amazing and dazzling serie of collages.

In these collages he creates a world of endless stairs.
People go up and down,
there is no beginning and no end
it is unclear which way they are going,
there seems no way out of this labyrinth...

Day 82 - One of my favorite artists: Liu Bolin, Hiding in the city

One of the artists I admire a lot is Liu Bolin.
In particular his serie of photographs called "Hiding in the city".

Bolin, also known as The Invisible Man, has to stand still for hours while his assistants paint on him and make him slowly disappear whatever surrounds him...

Day 80 - Spring it is, love is in the air - tree art

Finally, it's Spring!

Love is in the air: birds are singing loud and building nests.

And we, we are looking forward to go outside for a walk, a run,
a drink, a sunbath... and some of us express their love in a special way.

In today's paper I came across a wonderful photo sequence of hearts, carved in trees.
The photos are taken by Marc de Haan, a Dutch photographer.

Day 79 - The Berlin Wall (2) - monument of freedom and art

In Berlin remains of the wall cannot only be seen at the East Side Gallery.

Remains of the wall can also be seen at Checkpoint Charlie and the Potsdamer Platz.
At the Potsdamer Platz the remains are covered with graffiti which turns them in
'art' pieces.

Underneath two photos I took myself at the Potsdamer Platz.

Day 78 - The Berlin Wall: East Side Gallery

The Berlin Wall was the physical division between West Berlin and East Germany from 1961 to 1989. It was also a symbolic boundary between democracy and Communism during the Cold War.

Memories of the Wall, however, are still very much alive. The most famous part is the East Side Gallery,
an international memorial for freedom. The gallery consists of 105 paintings form artists from all over the world.

Part of the East Side Gallery has to be removed to make way to a new bridge and a luxury block of flats. Hundreds of people protest against the demolition work an dhop that the Gallery can be saved...

Day 71 - Create 3D objects with the new 3D printing pen

Emerging toy and robotics company WobbleWorks just announced the 3Doodler:
a pen that allows you to draw and create your own 3D objects.

The good news is that is a simple to use and affordable device. No need for technical knowledge, software or computers.

The bad news is that it will still take some time before you can get your hands on one.
WobbleWorks hopes to launch the pen in September 2013.

Day 70 - Virtual shopping (1)

It is already a while ago since Tesco opened a virtual supermarket on a subway platform in South Korea. Recently, they opened a larger version of this concept in Seoul. The concept is the same: pictures of products are posted on a wall, with QR codes underneath. Shoppers use their smartphones to scan the codes of the items they want to buy.  With 500 more or less 'familiar products in the store, this is a real time-saver.

Day 68 - Creative telephone sheep

Aren't they cute, these sheep made from out of date telephone parts?

You can see them at the Museum of Communications in Frankfurt, Germany. The installation, that consists of 32 sheep, is designed by Jean Luc Cornec.

However, these sheep are not only cute. They also show us how out of date phones get a new life due to a shift in perspective. The ability to see expired products and materials in a new way is an important one. It can help us reduce the mass of products we consume nowadays, and more importantly it can help us reduce the amount of waste.

The aim of this project is to connect photographers from all over the world (100 countries!).
So come on and join this project. All you have to do is to shoot a self-portrait and of course make use of a red line.

The statistics are now:
241 self-portraits
from 32 countries.... still 68 to go!

Follow the red line...
